Minister Ong Ye Kung should clarify what MOH knows, and publish every result before any trial here.
On 24 September, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung announced at the United Nations that Hilleman Laboratories in Singapore will produce a new Ebola vaccine for clinical trials, using “the same platform used for the existing licensed Zaire ebolavirus vaccine”. That platform is rVSV.
Four days later, US Senator Rand Paul released Dr Anthony Fauci’s private diary and emails from March 2016. They describe what happened when US Army scientists gave monkeys a VSV Ebola vaccine, then exposed them to Ebola in the air.
The vaccinated monkeys died anyway, and their lungs were worse
Dr Fauci wrote that “the VSV vaccine did not protect (no surprise)”, and that “16 of 20 vaccinated animals died”. Both unvaccinated monkeys died too, but “they did NOT have inflammation in the lung. However, the vaccinated animals had necrosis, inflammation and fibrin in the lungs.”
The embassies “went bonkers”
The results were sent to the US FDA and shared with embassies in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, where a large Ebola vaccine trial was about to begin. In Dr Fauci’s words, the embassies “went bonkers since it looks like we’re going to vaccinated people with the dangers [sic] vaccine.”
Dr Fauci wanted it classified
His reaction was not to investigate. He wrote: “This should have been a classified experiment that never should have been done in the first place.” When the Army said it wanted to publish the data, he wrote:
“I said that I thought that it should be classified and the NSC people blew them out of the water and said that they agreed with me.”
His own biodefence director disagreed. He called the classification issue “a red herring”. He also warned that the lung damage “will need to be characterized and factored out of the next generation” of these vaccines.
Why were they spraying Ebola in the first place?
The US treats Ebola as a possible bioweapon. Its plans assume an attack where Ebola is released into the air, so vaccines are tested against it. Dr Fauci’s own institute helped pay for the study.
To be fair: Dr Fauci and his colleagues stressed that breathing in a lab aerosol is very different from catching Ebola naturally. When the virus was injected rather than inhaled, these vaccines protected the monkeys without lung damage. The diary does not say which company’s VSV vaccine was tested.
Minister Ong should clarify
Singapore will now host production of an Ebola vaccine on the same platform. Our Health Sciences Authority has just been given control over Ebola, anthrax and plague. So we ask Minister Ong:
- Has MOH seen the US airborne-exposure data on rVSV vaccines, including which vaccine caused the lung damage?
- Has the problem Dr Fauci’s own team flagged been “factored out” of the new vaccine?
- Where will the clinical trials be held, and will any take place in Singapore?
- Will MOH publish every animal and human result before anyone here receives it?
At the UN, Minister Ong said “the answer is not to delay reporting.” We agree. Apply that standard at home.
